A group of Bellingham men recently completed a 14-week health course as part of Well Communities.

The course was set up as it had been noticed that there had been far fewer men participating in Well Communities projects – fewer than 1 in 5 of overall participants in Lewisham.

It was also noticed that many of the projects, such as jewellery-making and dance classes, were projects more likely to attract females. So a special project was designed from feedback gathered from local men at a couple of community events in 2015.

The Active Gateway Men’s Health programme included a range of physical activities – including circuit training, walking football and zumba – together with talks on health topics such as stress, diabetes and heart disease.

The project partnered with NHS Community Health Improvement in Lewisham who delivered 7 sessions around healthy eating and physical activity. Well Communities volunteers delivered some of the exercise activities.

Eight men completed the course and have gone on to join the gym at the Bellingham Leisure Centre where the project took place. Well Communities is now working with the London FA to begin weekly walking football sessions at the centre in April as the taster session was enjoyed by all.
